Driver Education, June 2013

Diablo’s next track events are in September and November and are now available for registration at motorsportreg.com. We will be at Thunderhill Raceway on Thursday September 5th and Mazda Laguna Seca on Tuesday November 26 th Again, we will be doing .our popular pre-event chalk, talk and video sessions for both new and experienced drivers a couple of weeks before each.

Both Diablo events will continue our successful formula of small run groups, limited overall event size, a good lunch and unlimited bottled water for participants on the day, included in the registration fee. We will also do our customary get together and check in the night before.

We now need to get instructors committed and manage the sign up process. Given our experience in March, early sign up is advised as we sold out all groups, with Beginner selling out months before.

In September, the following day, (6th) is Derrick’s Day with Hooked On Driving. Not only does that mean an opportunity to run two consecutive days, but significantly, Derrick Des Marteau was a Diablo member whose life was cut short by prostate cancer. David Ray and the Hooked On Driving team created this track day as a tribute to him and a fund raiser for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Not only do all sign ups benefit this worthwhile cause, but also there will be demo rides in a variety of exotic cars, plus both silent and open auctions donated to help. Apart from all of that it’s a fun day!

Sign up to run with Diablo on September 5th and hang around for the second day with HOD.

On November 26th, our Mazda Laguna Seca day will immediately follow two days (24/25th) with our friends from PCA Golden Gate Region. You could sign up for three consecutive days of Porsche fun at this fabulous track. I know many of us will overlap a day or two.

Also in September is the local Danville D’Elegance event (September 21st & 21st) benefitting Parkinson’s care and research. On the Saturday, there will be a tour visiting one of Napa’s leading vineyards, then the Gala Charity days of Porsche fun at this fabulous track. I know many of us will overlap a day or two.

Also in September is the local Danville D’Elegance event (September 21st & 22nd) benefitting Parkinson’s care and research. On the Saturday, there will be a tour visiting one of Napa’s leading vineyards, then the Gala Charity Dinner in the evening at Blackhawk Museum. On the Sunday, the concours and car show closes central Danville for the day with 150 cars lined up in the street. Last year, eight Diablo drivers made it to display cars and join in this terrific day. We’ll be looking to gather together and do the same this year.

It costs around $100 donation to enter your car, which goes to Parkinson’s care and research – the Danville D’Elegance is one of the top contributors to the Michael J Fox foundation in the country!

To enter go to http://www.danville-delegance.org.

In the meantime, I’ve been a bit low-profile with the DE team lately – I apologize for that but work travel badly interrupts leisure time. I have managed to keep up attendance of our Board meetings and was voted in as Vice President last month. Thanks for the vote of confidence, as ever I am delighted to help bring driving fun to Diablo.

Now summer’s here the track is the place to be... Looking forward to the rest of a great driving year!
