How to download the Advocate PDF Print E-mail

Q: On the old website, when I clicked on the link to download the latest issue of the Advocate, it immediately started downloading. Now I have to click through two more pages to download the file. Why did you make it harder?

A: The new website includes a component that lets us organize many different kinds of files for download, tracks information like how many times they've each been downloaded, who wrote them, et cetera. It may be less convenient when you want to get the Advocate, but it's important for us to be able to see how many people are reading the newsletter. Let's walk through a couple ways you can download the Advocate.

When you visit our homepage at the start of a month you might notice an article in the Announcements section of the homepage with a headline like, "May 2010 Advocate Now Available." Here's an example:

Newsletter Announcement

At this point if you click on the "click here" link in the announcement, you'll go to a page describing the file and offering you the option of downloading it from the primary site (our web site) or a "mirror" or backup site (currently the PCA national site). These two buttons are shown in the following partial screenshot:

As soon as you click on the "Download" or "Mirror 1" button, the newsletter will be sent to your browser. Please note that the download speed will depend on the speed of your Internet connection, how busy the web site is, how congested the Internet is between our server and your Interner Service Provider (ISP), et cetera. It could take a few seconds, or it might take a few minutes.

Depending on how your computer's web browser and/or operating system are configured, the file may open in a new tab in your browser, a new browser window, or in a separate application. The following partial screenshot shows the newsletter being displayed in a web browser tab after somebody has clicked on the Download button above:

Now, you don't have to download the Advocate from an Announcement. You can find the current issue, and many back issues, by clicking on the Newsletters link in the Main Menu. The Main Menu appears on the left side of all pages of our website and looks like this:

Clicking on the Newsletter link will take you to a portion of our website that's dedicated to organizing files that our members can download. There is a category of downloads called Newsletters, which will be listed when you click on that Newsletter link above. Here's an example of what the list of newsletters may look like:

From this list, if you wanted to download the May 2010 issue of the Advocate you should click on the circled title, or the PDF icon to the left of it. You'll then be taken to the download details page with the "Download" and "Mirror 1" buttons shown above.
